Attune on the Move: Great American Bakesale

Monday, April 19th, 2010

According to the Share our Strength website, they cite that “nearly 17 million— almost one in four—children in America face hunger.” This national non-profit is working to eradicate childhood hunger in America. The Share Our Strength (SOS) name highlights the non-profit’s belief that if we all bring what we do best, our collective strength will help end this societal problem.

Several ways they do this is through fundraising programs such as the Great American Bake Sale. This bake sale is held in cities throughout the U.S. and brings together home bakers and food bloggers to bake their best with all proceeds going to SOS. This year’s bake sale was on April 17th.

At Attune, we discussed how to be involved. I have worked several Taste of the Nation events of SOS and believe strongly in the cause. Bringing delicious foods for good digestive health to help people live whole lives are something we get behind on a daily basis. The Great American Bake Sale was an opportunity to bring some Attune goodies to the table while supporting SOS.

I baked Gooey Gluten Free Brownies with Mint Chocolate Attune squares on top as our offering to the San Francisco bake sale. After my 40 day stint of going gluten free, I discovered how challenging it can be to find gluten free treats. I wanted to ensure they were soy, tree nut, peanut and gluten free (they had butter, so no luck on the dairy-free front).

The morning of the bake sale found San Francisco drenched in warm sunlight. It was the perfect day for people to be out and about. This year, the Great American Bake Sale also brought in a collective food blogger contingent. The San Francisco bake sale was organized by local food blogger Anita Chu, outside of Omnivore Books, a local food bookstore in Noe Valley. Food bloggers came out in full force to lend a helping hand for Share Our Strength. My gluten free brownies were joined by handmade macarons, salty or spicy caramel corn, bittersweet chocolate tarts with sea salt and meyer lemon along with chocolate banana cupcake lollipops and a chocolate espresso cake. Yum!

It was fun to chat with passersby about the abundance of goodies on the tables and feel good about bringing something to the table. In the end, our San Francisco contingent raised $1650! What a great way to spend a Saturday.
