long-term-rewards-daily-decisions

by Rob at Attune Foods

To me, digestive health means feeling great, which said a differently is not feeling anything bad!

  • Not feeling too full
  • Not feeling hungry
  • Not feeling queasy
  • Not feeling slow
  • Not feeling heavy
  • Everything working well.

The key is eating the right amount of the right things that keep your body humming.

But it is hard to say no to a delicious looking treat (doughnut, bacon, burger), especially when you know it will “taste” so good.   But minutes later you pay the penalty and feel just a little bit worse.  It is a daily discussion between my head, my mouth and my gut.

Eating well today is tough, especially when you are away from your kitchen.  I was on the road this week and reminded of the challenge.  How can I get healthy calories when all I have to choose from is airport food that lacks an ingredient list?  Do I cave and go for the burger (it only happens every so often) or hold out with water until I get home?

Here is my thought process:  Shouldn’t food be fun – not just functional?  I did go for a run this AM and have been putting in some solid walking miles.   Ok, I’ll go for a beer with that burger.  Now I am full but not feeling my best.  To make up for it I’ll have water only on the flight, and lots of it.    And tomorrow morning I’ll start out on another day’s journey with a bowl of Uncle Sam.  Or maybe I’ll get creative and mix something in – nuts, some Erewhon cocoa crispies and some fruit is sounding pretty good.  Then if I can keep it going through lunch…..

I know the rewards are long term and the daily decisions are now.  Shifting the balance towards the good (more fiber, more veggies, more fruit) good things will happen.

Running and Digestive Health

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Let’s talk about poop.

You know – that taboo thing everyone does, but no one talks about? Yep. That.

Pooping is important. Especially if you’re a runner. Pooping is extremely important to runners. Let’s just say, there’s a reason come race day the line for the porta potties is a mile long before the start. They’re all trying to poop. I’ve been there and, if you’re a runner, I’m sure you’ve been there too.

When I first started running I was such a newbie, I knew nothing. I ate what I thought I should be eating and ran how I thought I should be running. I wasn’t sure what was normal and I was pretty sure all the ‘pit stops’ I was making during my runs was not.

Turns out they were. I believe the term ‘Runner’s Trots’ comes to mind for most. It’s only normal because most running newbies (like I was) don’t realize how important digestive health is for runners.

Before long runs it’s best to avoid high fiber foods (such as fruit, vegetables, long grains) and dairy. It’s also not smart to run on a full stomach or (in my case) on an empty stomach. Depending on how long the run is a 50-250 calorie snack does the trick.

Learning what works best for your body is key. Even though many runners outgrow ‘runner’s trots’ there’s still that urge to – ahem- relieve ourselves come race day, hence the super long porta potty lines.

Again digestive health is important and the ability to let it all out before start is key. That bloated, uneasy feeling doesn’t always make for a great race. Most runners prefer to drink coffee the day of to awaken the system or get their probiotics in during the week of.

Poop. Poop. Poop.

Have I said poop enough yet? ;)

If you’re a runner – what do you do to ensure digestive health come race day?
