5 Holistically Healthy Gifts That Don’t Need Wrapping

healthy gifts for the holidays

When we think of healthy gifts, we often assume they involve things wrapped in fancy paper (recycled?) and placed under a tree. Because holistic health involves the whole person, my healthy list includes something to benefit each aspect of your being. Each part that’s healthy contributes to the health of the whole person.

The 5 Gifts

1) Social

Take a digital Sabbath:  Many of us spend hours online working and investing in relationships. A healthy social life contributes to your wellness, but it’s important to know your personal limit—that point when you’re crossing over into the not-so-healthy zone. Social media is a wonderful place to foster positive relationships, but when it becomes draining and interrupts all your offline relationships, it might be best to do a bit of digital detoxing. There are lots of online productivity tools to help you make the most of your online time and still have plenty of hours for the other aspects of your life. Take advantage of those offline hours and invest in face-to-face relationships.

2) Physical

Be mindful before you munch: Nourishing your body is much different than feeding your body. You can feed your body donuts, but you aren’t nourishing it. Unlike in the past, I begin the day with a healthy breakfast choice like Uncle Sam Original cereal or Erewhon Raisin Bran cereal, two of my very favorites. I skipped breakfast for years, thinking I was fine without it. Now my whole outlook on breakfast has changed and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my energy levels and eating patterns the rest of the day. The right breakfast sets the day’s nutrition tone. You feel good not only because you nourished your body but also because you made a healthy choice right from the start.

3) Mental

Begin the day with 5 minutes of meditation: A recent study suggests that experienced meditators’ minds wander less and spend less time in what’s called the brain’s default mode. The CNN article states “Typically, drifting thoughts tend to focus on negative subjects, creating more stress and anxiety.”  Our minds are the first place health starts. But it can also be where it ends too! Begin each day in a positive way to focus on your personal goals and plan your success.

4) Emotional

Embrace gratitude: Staying in a state of gratefulness is powerful. In a moment your view of your life will change. When my kids were younger, when they would start complaining and arguing, I would tell them both to say three things they were thankful for. It was incredible how their moods transformed and their faces changed. I find it much easier to do for someone else than myself but, with practice, it’s become much easier.

5) Spiritual

Exercise your heart and spirit together: We know the benefits of exercise and how it’s good for our hearts; combine it with a purpose outside yourself and you benefit on the inside and the outside. Maybe there’s an elderly neighbor who would love her dog walked, or a friend who wants to try the local gym but doesn’t want to walk in alone. If you exercise using a stationary bike treadmill, use the time to phone a friend who needs some uplifting words.

Simple & Healthy Snacks: Greek Ranch Red Pepper Dip

after school snack idea

What do you think of when you think of savory snacks? If I had to choose, I’d choose savory over sweet any day. But savory doesn’t have to mean bad fats and salt overload. I find that most unhealthy ingredients can be easily substituted with healthy ingredients. My kids are always my taste testers, and I know they will be painfully truthful. Most meals and snacks have to pass their test since my goal is to get them to eat as healthy as possible. After-school snacks are a big part of their day, so trying to come up with ideas that can be grabbed quickly and munched while finishing up their homework is a big plus.

Recipes that are quick and simple with minimal ingredients are perfect for this non-cooking type fitness girl. I find that by using fewer ingredients, it’s easier to add a personal twist with some extra healthy ingredients that I choose instead of what a box says. To make sure I have choices available at all times, I keep the pantry stocked with a variety of healthy foods, so throwing together a savory snack is much easier to do. I find we save money by working off of some basics and then weekly adding on as needed. We don’t always eat at home, but I try to make what’s in the house something I feel good about my kids eating. I know that when they’re away from home, they don’t always make the best food choices.

The Encrusted Chicken Breast recipe from the Attune Foods Simple Healthy Recipes section is one of my favorites. Using the Uncle Sam Original Cereal, I crushed the cereal to be a bit finer (more kid friendly) and cut the breasts into strips instead of keeping them whole. This makes them easy to dip in the Greek Ranch Red Pepper Dip. The kids can dip their chicken strips while they work and I know that they’re eating something good for them. Finish it off with some fruit and they’re set and momma’s happy!

Here’s a great dip idea that I’ve made my own by substituting the buttermilk and regular mayonnaise. As you can see it’s a basic recipe that you could add to in number of ways

Greek Ranch Red Pepper Dip

  • 2/3 cup nonfat Greek style yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons Vegenaise
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste) lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon type mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped red pepper

*Vegenaise is my substitute for mayo.  It’s vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and delicious.

healthy snacks for being social online

Most sweet snacks have a bad reputation. Even the names sound bad: Twinkies, Ho-Ho’s, Ding-dongs. We all get hit, at least occasionally, with a snack attack during late night tweeting or trying to disable all the Facebook updates that are enabled without our permission. It’s too easy to open a bag of chips and mindlessly shovel one after another till we’ve polished off the bag. I only know this from experience.

Calorie-dense, sugary, sodium-laden snacks destroy any chances for weight loss and contribute to weight gain.

But I’m not anti-snack. Snacking isn’t the problem; it’s the snack chosen and how often. Think safe snacks — snacks that contribute to your health and don’t take away from it.

Healthy snack foods are all a matter of ingredients on hand. When having an attack, we reach for what’s available. Two in the morning is not the time to try to conjure up some willpower. Getting rid of all unhealthy snack foods and replacing them with healthy, yummy choices is key. Nutritious snacks provide you with nutrition you might have missed throughout your day. Keep the kids’ cookies hidden and healthy ingredients front and center.
