5 Holistically Healthy Gifts That Don’t Need Wrapping

healthy gifts for the holidays

When we think of healthy gifts, we often assume they involve things wrapped in fancy paper (recycled?) and placed under a tree. Because holistic health involves the whole person, my healthy list includes something to benefit each aspect of your being. Each part that’s healthy contributes to the health of the whole person.

The 5 Gifts

1) Social

Take a digital Sabbath:  Many of us spend hours online working and investing in relationships. A healthy social life contributes to your wellness, but it’s important to know your personal limit—that point when you’re crossing over into the not-so-healthy zone. Social media is a wonderful place to foster positive relationships, but when it becomes draining and interrupts all your offline relationships, it might be best to do a bit of digital detoxing. There are lots of online productivity tools to help you make the most of your online time and still have plenty of hours for the other aspects of your life. Take advantage of those offline hours and invest in face-to-face relationships.

2) Physical

Be mindful before you munch: Nourishing your body is much different than feeding your body. You can feed your body donuts, but you aren’t nourishing it. Unlike in the past, I begin the day with a healthy breakfast choice like Uncle Sam Original cereal or Erewhon Raisin Bran cereal, two of my very favorites. I skipped breakfast for years, thinking I was fine without it. Now my whole outlook on breakfast has changed and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my energy levels and eating patterns the rest of the day. The right breakfast sets the day’s nutrition tone. You feel good not only because you nourished your body but also because you made a healthy choice right from the start.

3) Mental

Begin the day with 5 minutes of meditation: A recent study suggests that experienced meditators’ minds wander less and spend less time in what’s called the brain’s default mode. The CNN article states “Typically, drifting thoughts tend to focus on negative subjects, creating more stress and anxiety.”  Our minds are the first place health starts. But it can also be where it ends too! Begin each day in a positive way to focus on your personal goals and plan your success.

4) Emotional

Embrace gratitude: Staying in a state of gratefulness is powerful. In a moment your view of your life will change. When my kids were younger, when they would start complaining and arguing, I would tell them both to say three things they were thankful for. It was incredible how their moods transformed and their faces changed. I find it much easier to do for someone else than myself but, with practice, it’s become much easier.

5) Spiritual

Exercise your heart and spirit together: We know the benefits of exercise and how it’s good for our hearts; combine it with a purpose outside yourself and you benefit on the inside and the outside. Maybe there’s an elderly neighbor who would love her dog walked, or a friend who wants to try the local gym but doesn’t want to walk in alone. If you exercise using a stationary bike treadmill, use the time to phone a friend who needs some uplifting words.

It was the best of breakfasts,
it was the worst of breakfasts,
it was the morning meal of wisdom,
it was the morning meal of foolishness…

While I’d love to write an entire post a la Charles Dickens I’ll spare you (and him, grave turning and all that). What I’m talking here is breakfast choices…

The worst of breakfasts, the morning meals of foolishness. As a blog-writing, fitness-loving, rural-living, chicken-raising, homeschooling mom of 3 boys I’ve had many. Grabbing a donut, pastry, or healthified cupcake (aka muffin) amidst the morning rush. Scarfing a bowl of high fructose corn syrup laden, artificial color loaded ‘breakfast cereal’ that simply appealed to my sweet tooth. Or perhaps in my mad dash to fit everything in my day it was merely inhaling a cup of happy-rainbow-unicorn-sunshine-juice…er, coffee.

Whatever the bad breakfast of choice was, the results were always the same: starting my day off on the wrong foot. My morning workout sabotaged by lack of energy. A sugar high followed by a mid-morning crash where I’m seeking more junk food or wishing they had coffee available in IV form. Or being so famished by the time lunch rolls around that I’m making more bad food choices and over-eating. In the case of the HFCS laden breakfast cereal I may have been set off on a binge. Any and all resulting in a downward spiral of a day all set in motion by bad breakfast choices.

On the other hand there is the best of breakfasts, the morning meals of wisdom. Having a bowl of Uncle Sam Strawberry Cereal with unsweetened vanilla almond milk if I’m in a rush.  Eating some overnight oats made with greek yogurt if I took the time to plan ahead. Or perhaps enjoying a veggie omelet if I have the time that morning.
Now these days are another story entirely. Following those breakfast choices I feel satisfied, energized, and focused. I am ready to take on whatever my day throws at me. Tough workout? Bring it on. No blood sugar crashes or binge urges. Just a clear head and a well-fueled body. I’m more likely to feel in control of my hunger and better prepared to continue my healthy food choices for lunch and throughout the rest of my day. Starting the day with good breakfast choices starts my day off on the right foot!

I’ve always heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when we’re trying to lose weight. But I always heard that as ‘eating breakfast is important’. As long as I had something for breakfast I thought I was doing well. After years of ignoring my body and filling it with junk I am now paying attention to its signals, to things like how I feel after I eat foods. This has made a world of difference. My food choices are night and day different than they were 5 to 10 years ago. I now realize that it’s very important for me to choose a breakfast that includes some protein, fiber, and healthy fats. And doesn’t include any over-processed, sugar laden fluff. I now hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and think how important that makes good breakfast choices.

It is a far, far better breakfast that I choose….OK, I’ll stop.

The importance of breakfast to your metabolism

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Are you like me and you hop out of bed each morning ravenous and ready for breakfast? Or do you get through the morning with just a hot cup of coffee and absolutely no interest in that first meal of the day? It always surprises me when I hear from clients who skip breakfast in an effort to cut calories and lose weight, or because they’re convinced that they are not hungry and “couldn’t possibly eat anything in the morning.” The way I see it, breakfast is another opportunity in the day to eat delicious food!, and it’s also a meal where you can fill up on necessary nutrients. But one point that always seems to appeal to people is breakfast’s ability to get your metabolism moving – that’s your body’s calorie-burning mechanism.

But how does breakfast boost metabolism?

Think back to last night’s dinner. Maybe you ate around 7pm, and then your body digested and metabolized the food. Overnight while you were sleeping, your metabolism slowed down to an even hum, constantly working but at a more resting pace. Your metabolism won’t kick into high gear again – burning fuel (calories) at a faster rate – until you wake up and feed it in the morning. Think of it like fueling a car by putting gasoline into an empty tank or throwing a log on a dying fire for an added spark to get it burning again. However, if you skip breakfast and hold off eating until lunch, that’s an extra five or so hours of your morning when you’re letting your metabolism cruise along at a sluggish pace. Why not use it at its peak calorie burning capacity!? Breakfast is the jump start your body needs and the energy boost to power your day.

You don’t need to have a huge sit down breakfast buffet. Even a half of a granola bar, handful of nuts, a few bites of leftovers from dinner, or snack bag of fresh fruit on the go will do the trick if you eat within an hour or so of waking up. You may find eating in the AM actually makes you hungrier. This is a good thing! It’s your body’s way of telling you it’s rearing to go, and that your metabolism is revving. Keep listening to your body by feeding it with healthful foods when it’s hungry, and stopping when it’s full. But always remember the benefits of breakfast.
